win10 & DS4: Only trackpad works in Dark Souls 3

3 years 4 months ago #1 by fejwin
I was using the InputMapper 1.5 on windows 10 just a few days back and DS4 controller worked well.
Now all of a sudden only the trackpad works in Dark Souls 3 (can move the mouse in the main menu and click by pressing track pad), other buttons do nothing.
In the XInput test all buttons seem to register properly.

What should I do to make my DS4 controller work again?

Make sure that the controller is in exclusive mode (and that it has no errors when trying to connect exclusively) and make sure the are no orphaned game controller devices in your device manager. Also make sure the 360 controller is chosen as the default controller in Windows' joy.cpl.

The problem still persists. joy.cpl only shows xbox 360 controller after starting inputmapper - before that it shows "wireless controller" (it disappears and becomes 360 controller after starting inputmapper). I do not have any game controller entries in device manager - only after starting the inputmapper a 360 controller section appears there.

I get some errors in the log. Maybe this could help to single out the issue?
Here is the log:

EDIT:

Turned out, the errors in the log were due to me pressing the "Copy log" button. Now I exported the log by "Export log to file" and there are no error messages:

Everything checks out ok, The Souls series games have alwayse been hit or miss with IM, DS3 has built in Dual Shock support at least. Perhaps they pushed a game update that broke things.

In joy.cpl, try clicking advanced and making sure the 360 controller is selected anyway

Tried all these steps and nothing helped.

Here is how I fixed it:
Created a new partition (100gb chunk out of 800gb free idle space) and installed a windows 8.1 in parallel. After setting up all the drivers I installed InputMapper and Steam (kept the steam library untouched though, there was no need to reinstall Dark Souls 3 or anything - just had to copy over the save data from old windows). And voila - DS4 controller works like a charm in Windows 8.1 again.

The lesson:
There was nothing wrong with Dark Souls 3 (I emphasize that I used the exact same installation as under windows 10). The issue was with using Windows 10. This just goes to show that programs like InputMapper still can't consistently and properly set up the controllers under Windows 10. Having to dual boot in Win10 and Win8.1 depending on what I want to do is somewhat inconvenient, but still better than having an effectively not functioning DS4 controller under Win10.

Odes are there is a 3rd party culprit, most people including myself actually notice an increase in reliability under win 10. Nearly all of Win 10 issues except perhaps urns seem to be from those running windows insider or not keeping up to date at all.
